Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy encompasses hands on mobilization of the human body’s soft tissues (i.e. muscles, skin, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and membranes). Massage Therapy helps restore natural balance directly through mechanical manipulation of the soft tissues and indirectly through the soothing effects of touch on the autonomic nervous system.

If you’re experiencing swelling, aches, pains, or strains during the beginning or acute stages, massage therapy can help alleviate and reduce the pain, as well as treat any compensatory structures that may be experiencing additional strain. Massage therapists will also use lymphatic drainage techniques to help improve circulation and reduce pain in general. If your pain has progressed to the latter chronic stages, massage therapists can help to maintain range of motion, reduce adhesions, and reduce muscle tightness. This helps in improving tissue health as well as allowing you to return to your normal activities of daily living more easily.

If you’re suffering from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, a RMT can significantly help reduce the tightness and pain experienced in the jaw muscles through proper massage therapy. Through both intra-orally and extra-orally (inside & outside your mouth) massage therapy, a RMT can help reduce jaw pain, and in some cases, permanently eliminate the pain. If you’re experiencing jaw pain when chewing (the masseter muscle), a study showed that massage therapy was effective for pain treatment. Having a weekly massage therapy can also prevent tension headaches and migraines by increasing tissue health by means of blood circulation, as well as maintaining muscle metabolic balance. Furthermore, you can also reduce stress by massaging the muscles of the neck and jaw which can possibly be a factor in TMJ dysfunction.

Pregnancy massage therapy has been shown to reduce discomfort in pregnant women as a result of a changing body. A RMT can perform a pregnancy massage which will increase blood circulation to subsequently help your body and mind relax, as well as reduce edema (swelling). Following your post pregnancy, a RMT can help tighten up your stomach (abdominals) by stimulating stretched muscles within that region, and also relax strained muscles (as a result of your preganancy) such as your lower back pain. But aside from therapeutic approaches, which mom or any person for that matter doesn’t want a RMT to give them an amazing, relaxing massage?

Massage Therapists are only “registered” after finisA common benefit which we all have experienced at one point is that a RMT can also help reduce your lower back pain which can be a result of a work-related injury, prolonged sitting, sport injury, and lifting heavy objects. A study found that patients suffering from chronic and sub-acute lower back pain had benefited from massage therapy. Moreover, if the RMT combined massage therapy and exercise, the results were even more effective. The benefits from massage therapy treatment have been consistently outlined in numerous medical studies for years. One beneficial example of massage therapy is treating fibromyalgia because it reduces swelling, stiffness, pain, decreases anxiety and stress, and improves your sleep. By having a RMT treat you with a frequent massage therapy, your body will thank you as you will prevent and avoid future injuries.hing an intensive training curriculum, successful completion of provincial examinations and registration with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
